Stabbing Suspect Returns to Court after Cutting Off GPS Device 11 Years Ago

BOSTON, Sept. 20, 2012—A woman who allegedly cut off a GPS bracelet and fled her Revere stabbing case more than a decade ago was apprehended Tuesday and brought back to court to answer on the charges, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

ROSA COLON (D.O.B. 9/2/76) appeared yesterday in Chelsea District Court after her arrest on default warrants for armed assault with intent to murder, assault and battery on a public employee, failure to stop for police, and resisting arrest. She was also wanted on straight warrants for assault and battery on a public employee and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon – a car – that stemmed from the same July 4, 2001, incident.

Assistant District Attorney Caroline DeLuca requested that Colon’s original bail from the 2001 cases be revoked and that she be held on $10,000 cash bail. Judge Diana L. Maldonado declined to revoke Colon’s bail and instead set bail at $1,000 with the condition that Colon wear a GPS bracelet. She denied an oral motion by prosecutors to join the two matters addressed in the separate warrants.

On July 4, 2001, Revere police responded to a report of a fight at 250 Broadway, where they found a woman suffering from multiple cuts over her body. The victim told police that she had been stabbed by Colon.

When police attempted to arrest Colon, she allegedly became combative, hitting one officer in the face before taking off in a car with two children inside. During the chase that followed, Colon allegedly rammed the car into police cruisers twice and struck one officer in the chest with the car’s side mirror.

After her arrest, Colon allegedly attempted to strangle herself with her shirt and injured an officer who tried to remove her from her cell.

At her arraignment the following day on charges of armed assault with intent to murder, assault and battery on a police officer, failure to stop for police, and resisting arrest, Colon was released on her own recognizance with the condition that she stay on house arrest and wear a GPS monitoring bracelet. She is accused of cutting off the bracelet shortly thereafter. Additional charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault and battery on a police officer stemmed from Colon’s alleged actions during the car chase and were filed in the days following Colon’s initial arraignment.

This past Tuesday, Chelsea police officers arrived at an apartment at 835 Broadway in an attempt to serve an arrest warrant on a suspect in an unrelated case. They instead found Colon in the apartment and placed her under arrest.

During her 11 years on the lam, Colon has allegedly lived between South Carolina and Massachusetts. She is represented by attorney Janine Bandino and is due back in court on Oct. 15.
