100+ KIDS TURN OUT FOR DA’S SOCCER TOURNAMENT

More than 100 kids and teens from across Boston and Suffolk County had a ball with Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley, New England Revolution player Shalrie Joseph, and others yesterday.

Joining Suffolk prosecutors and victim advocates, local crime watch groups, and community members, dozens upon dozens of city youth took part in the seventh annual Soccer for Peace tournament at Dorchester’s Pope John Paul II field yesterday.

“When the community gets together like this, it doesn’t matter what team you’re on,” Conley said. “Everybody wins.”

While refreshments and raffle prizes were donated by local businesses – including Citizens Bank, which provided a free backpack full of school supplies to every young attendee – the star of the show was five-time Major League Soccer All-Star Shalrie Joseph, who spoke directly to the kids, signed autographs, and posed for pictures.

“He’s the definition of a role model,” Conley said of Joseph. “Here’s a sports star who really cares about the young men and women in his community, and it shows. Shalrie Joseph is a true team player.”

Each summer since 2003, Conley has welcomed Suffolk County residents to Pope John Paul II Park, where kids, teens, and adults break off into teams and play one another in the world’s most popular sport. Conley’s office hosts the event as a way to build harmony, community, and leadership skills for young people while playing host to a fun, end-of-summer activity.

The tournament provides an opportunity for city youth and community members to join in an afternoon of recreation, physical activity, and positive interaction with members of the criminal justice system with the goal of promoting peace through teamwork and cooperation.
