$25k BAIL FOR BRIGHTON STICK-UP SUSPECT

An alleged armed robber’s getaway was foiled last night by the quick-thinking convenience store clerk who loaded up his bag with coins during a hold-up in Brighton, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

DEREK ANDRE PRICE (D.O.B. 5/11/91) of Roxbury was arraigned this morning on charges of armed robbery while masked, assault with a dangerous weapon, unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, and unlawfully carrying a loaded firearm. Assistant District Attorney John Seed recommended that he be held on $100,000 bail; Brighton District Court Judge Robert McKenna set bail at $25,000.

Price was arrested at about 9:20 last night after Boston Police responded to a robbery call at the Quality Market on North Beacon Street. The assailant, a clerk said, entered the store wearing a hooded sweatshirt and something covering his face and demanded cash while pointing a gun.

“Give me all the money,” the suspect said. “And I want the bags under the counter, too.”

The clerk handed over the cash – but he also heaved about $300 in coins into the same bag, weighing it down and slowing the assailant’s getaway.

“We tell folks not to resist during a robbery because the stakes are just too high,” Conley said. “But when it came to outwitting the assailant, this clerk gave no quarter.”

After the assailant left the store, the clerk followed him in his vehicle and called Boston Police. Additional responding officers observed Price, who met the description given by the clerk, and gave chase to Faneuil Street, where they apprehended him.

During a pat-frisk, officers recovered from Price’s pocket a .32 caliber revolver loaded with three rounds of ammunition. The clerk positively identified Price as the man who had robbed him. A search of the area led to the money’s recovery in a bag near the Meineke Muffler Shop on Market Street.

Price was represented today by attorney Adam Narris. He will return to court on May 17.
