2nd Man Charged in Robbery of Homeless Man in Wheelchair

The second of two men accused of robbing a homeless man who uses a wheelchair was charged this week with the late December incident at a Boston shelter, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

RICHARD WIGGINS (D.O.B . 7/21/58) of Dorchester was arraigned in Roxbury District Court Wednesday on a single count of unarmed robbery. Assistant District Attorney Thomas Costello recommended that he be held on $5,000 cash bail and have his open bail on an unrelated offense out of Brookline revoked. Judge Pamela Dashiell set bail at $2,500 and declined to revoke his open bail.

Wiggins’ co-defendant, TIMOTHY BANKSTON (D.O.B. 2/12/53), was arraigned for the same offense last week, when Assistant District Attorney Ashley Wirth also recommended $5,000 bail and Judge Shannon Frison similarly imposed $2,500. At the time of his arraignment, Bankston had recently been released from a federal penitentiary.

Bankston and Wiggins are charged with stealing cash and a cellular phone from a 50-year-old man who uses a wheelchair and was staying at the Woods Mullen Shelter on the afternoon of Dec. 29.

The pair allegedly circled the victim in the lobby at about 3:30 p.m. One of the men then put his arm around the victim’s neck and the two allegedly went through his pockets and a pouch he kept around his neck. Inside that pouch was a quantity of cash, which the assailants stole along with his phone.

The victim provided a description of the assailants and told responding Boston Police officers that there were video cameras at the scene of the incident. The officers spoke with shelter staff and viewed the footage. Based on their interviews with the staff and a review of the footage, they were able to identify Bankston and Wiggins; they later obtained the arrest warrants on which both men were subsequently picked up.

Bankston was represented by attorney Carl Williams and will return to court on Feb. 3. Wiggins was represented by attorney Chalotte Creeley and will return to court on Jan. 23.
