Alleged Allston Gunman Held on Half-Million Bail

A Dorchester man arrested by a Boston Police SWAT team this morning was held on half a million dollars’ cash bail at his arraignment on attempted murder and related charges stemming from a double shooting in Allston last month, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

PAUL ANTHONY BROWN (D.O.B. 9/7/86) is the second suspect to be charged in the Dec. 30 incident on Chester Street, which left two men with serious injuries. He is charged with armed robbery, armed assault in a dwelling, and armed assault with intent to murder.

Prosecutors say Brown and WILLIAM VARGAS (D.O.B. 2/27/87) of Randolph promised to sell the victims – ages 23 and 56 – $1500 worth of marijuana at 15 Chester St. just before 10:30 that night. When the men produced that money for Vargas, though, Brown allegedly appeared, produced a handgun, and shot them. The victims suffered multiple gunshot wounds that, while serious, were not life-threatening.

Boston Police detectives undertook a methodical investigation that started at the scene and soon included witness statements, ballistics evidence, and additional information that led to Brown and Vargas, who was arrested and arraigned on identical charges last week amid the ongoing probe.

Vargas is represented by attorney Jack Diamond. Brown is represented by attorney Thomas Amoroso. He will return to court on Feb. 1.
