Alleged Assailant Charged in Near-Fatal Stabbing

BOSTON, Sept. 6, 2017—A South End man accused of a near-fatal stabbing during an apparent robbery was identified and apprehended through the cooperation of witnesses, the use of public safety cameras, and a fingerprint match, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

DAVONGIE STONE (D.O.B. 4/28/97) was arraigned today on charges of armed assault with intent to murder, armed robbery, and related offenses for the Sept. 3 incident near Downtown Crossing. Assistant District Attorney David McGowan of the DA’s Senior Trial Unit recommended that he be held on $1 million cash bail. Boston Municipal Court Judge Marc Hart Summerville imposed $500,000 and revoked Stone’s bail on an open shoplifting case out of Roxbury.

Boston Police and Boston Emergency Medical Services responded to the area of Washington and Winter streets at about 12:40 on Sunday morning for a report of a person stabbed. The victim, a 21-year-old man, had sustained multiple injuries and was rushed to Tufts Medical Center with life-threatening stab wounds to his chest.

Boston Police homicide detectives spoke with witnesses who described the assault and the assailants’ path of flight. Detectives obtained footage from public safety cameras in the area, which recorded images of two men following the victim, attacking him, and grabbing at the area of his waist while he lay on the ground. The men began to walk away when one of them – later identified as Stone – returned to assault the victim once more before fleeing on foot.

Footage from public safety cameras in the Downtown Crossing MBTA station shows this assailant jump a turnstile, placing his hands on the metal surfaces on either side of the gate. Investigators observed a reddish-brown substance consistent with blood in this area, and criminalists were able to lift a handprint from it. That handprint was in turn submitted to a database that matched it with Stone’s fingerprints from prior arrests. Stone’s booking photo was also consistent with that of the assailant seen in the footage. The identity of the second assailant remains under investigation.

“Witness statements, public safety cameras, and fingerprint analysis all played significant parts in solving this case,” Conley said. “Prosecutors will marshal that evidence, build the best and fairest case possible, and present it in a Suffolk County courtroom.”

Police obtained a warrant for Stone’s arrest. At about 2:30 yesterday afternoon, they spotted him walking near Boston Common and placed him under arrest. Stone will be transported to face charges for additional violent crimes in Middlesex County.

Stone was represented today by attorney Jessica Whelan. He will return to court on Sept. 25.
