ALLEGED CHILD RAPIST HELD ON HIGH BAIL

A 24-year-old hearing-impaired man was held on high bail at his Suffolk Superior Court arraignment today on charges that he raped a young girl repeatedly over the course of a year after meeting her at a Brighton church, District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

ERIK ROLDAN (D.O.B. 1/19/86), whose legal residence is in East Boston but who was living in Allston at the time of his arrest, pleaded not guilty through an American Sign Language interpreter to three counts of rape of a child by force and three counts of indecent assault and battery on a child under the age of 14 for incidents that allegedly occurred from Sept. 1, 2009, to Aug. 11 of this year.

Clerk Magistrate Gary D. Wilson ordered that Roldan continue to be held on the $100,000 cash bail that was imposed at his district arraignment on Aug. 12. Wilson also told the defendant that, should he make bail, he must stay away from and have no contact with the victim’s family and have no contact with any child under the age of 16 while the case is open.

The Suffolk County Grand Jury indicted Roldan on Sept. 17, moving the case from Brighton District Court to Suffolk Superior Court, where it will be adjudicated. Roldan’s arraignment last week was rescheduled because an interpreter could not be located.

Assistant District Attorney Leora Joseph, chief of Conley’s Child Protection Unit, told the court that authorities first became aware of the alleged abuse in August, when the child – who had recently turned 7 years old – disclosed to a family member that Roldan, “a friend of the family and frequent visitor to the home, had raped her,” Joseph said.

The victim disclosed that the sexual abuse, which occurred over the course of a year, had been “ongoing and repetitive,” Joseph said.

Following the disclosure from the victim, Joseph told the court, a forensic pediatric nurse examiner found evidence that corroborated that the victim was sexually assaulted.

Roldan was represented by attorney Edward Wayland. He is expected to return to court on October 25.
