BOSTON, May 10, 2017— A Roxbury man charged in the hit-and-run crash that killed 29-year-old Rick Archer was held on high bail at his arraignment today, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

MALONE KIDANEMARIAM (D.O.B. 2/19/92) was arraigned today in Boston Municipal Court on a charge of leaving the scene of a collision causing death.  At the request of Assistant District Attorney Benjamin Megrian, Judge James Stanton ordered Kidanemariam held on $25,000 bail.

Megrian told the court that Archer and a second individual were riding their bicycles on Commonwealth Avenue at approximately 3:19 a.m. on April 30 when the victim was struck by a silver sedan with a New York license plate.  That vehicle, witnesses said, failed to slow or stop following after striking Archer.  The vehicle instead turned right onto Berkeley Street, traveling the wrong direction as it fled.

Archer was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he died of his injuries on May 2.

Boston Police detectives recovered video from cameras in the area of the crash and distributed images of the vehicle.  A security guard at the Boston Common Garage observed a silver Toyota Camry with front end damage and contacted police.  The vehicle was leased by Kidanemariam.

Images captured by a security camera inside the garage depict Kidanemariam operating the vehicle shortly after the fatal crash.  In addition, witnesses identified him as the driver of the car when the crash occurred, prosecutors said. Kidanemariam surrendered himself to Boston Police yesterday evening.

The investigation into the crash was still active, prosecutors said, and additional charges have not been ruled out.
