Alleged Gunman Apprehended in NY after 1st Degree Murder Indictment

BOSTON, Jan. 31, 2017— Boston Police Commissioner William B. Evans and Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley today announced the arrest of a Dedham man in the June murder of 31-year-old Marcus Hall inside a Mattapan barber shop.

Early this morning members of the Boston Police Fugitive Unit, along with US Marshals and New York City Police Department, arrested WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE (D.O.B. 10/12/87) of Dedham for Hall’s June 14 murder. Conley’s office had secured a four-count indictment against Shakespeare late last year following an extensive presentation to the Suffolk County Grand Jury.  Shakespeare was taken into custody in the Bronx, New York, without incident and will face extradition back to Boston in the coming days.

At about 12:20 p.m. on June 14, officers assigned to District B-3 responded to a call for a person shot in the area of 1178 Blue Hill Avenue in Mattapan. On arrival officers located a male victim later identified as Hall suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Hall was pronounced deceased at the scene. Boston Police Homicide detectives and prosecutors from Conley’s office worked tirelessly investigating and ultimately identifying Shakespeare as the suspect responsible for this brazen daytime murder. The investigation led authorities to believe that Shakespeare fled the state shortly after the murder to avoid capture.

Shakespeare is being processed in New York awaiting extradition back to Boston. Upon his return, he will be arraigned in Suffolk Superior Court on charges of first-degree murder, unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, and unlawfully carrying a loaded firearm.

“This arrest illustrates the commitment and extraordinary work of my investigators and officers. It sends a strong message that no matter where you run to, we will find you and we will arrest you,” said Commissioner Evans. “I pray that the news of this arrest brings some level of peace to the family of the victim, and wish to thank my officers and all who helped locate and arrest this dangerous criminal.”

“This investigation was marked by seamless collaboration by police and prosecutors,” District Attorney Conley said. “On the street and in the grand jury, their work set the stage for Mr. Hall’s loved ones to find justice in a Suffolk County courtroom.  I’m grateful to them, to the New York Police Department, US Marshals, and every person – sworn and civilian – who helped us reach this point.”

Assistant District Attorney Craig Iannini of the DA’s Homicide Unit led the grand jury proceedings resulting in indictments against Shakespeare. Elise McConnell is the DA’s assigned victim-witness advocate.  An arraignment date has not yet been scheduled.
