Alleged Gunman Captured, Held on High Bail after Shooting at T Station

BOSTON, Aug. 20, 2014—A Dorchester man was held on high bail at his arraignment today on charges he attempted to murder a 24-year-old Randolph man, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

BALFOUR McLEAN (D.O.B. 3/17/92) was arraigned in Dorchester Municipal Court on charges of armed assault with intent to murder, unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition as a subsequent offense, carrying a loaded firearm, possessing a firearm with an defaced serial number, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling, possession of a Class B substance, and being a Level I armed career criminal.  Prosecutors told the court that McLean was previously convicted of unlawfully possessing ammunition in 2011 and 2012 and of possession with intent to distribute a Class B substance in 2011.

Judge Jonathan Tynes granted a request by Assistant District Attorney Brian Brodigan that bail be set at $150,000 and ordered McLean to wear a GPS monitor, abide by a curfew, and stay away from the location of the incident in the event that he makes bail.

According to prosecutors, members of the Boston Police District B-3 Drug Control Unit were in the area of Talbot and Dorchester avenues shortly after 7:30 p.m. Wednesday when they heard gunshots from the direction of the Ashmont MBTA station.  Officers ran to the scene to find the victim lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to the abdomen and observed a man wearing a black baseball cap, later identified as McLean, run from the station with an object in his hand, prosecutors said.

Officers pursued McLean and were able to take him into custody in front of an Alban Street residence.  In front of a neighboring residence, police located a Ruger 357 revolver; it was found to contain two spent rounds and three live rounds of ammunition, prosecutors said.  The gun was inside a sock wrapped in a black t-shirt and a black baseball cap.

While sitting on the ground prior to being placed in a cruiser, McLean allegedly grabbed a handful of grass and rubbed it between his hands in an apparent attempt to wipe something from his hands, prosecutors said.  A Boston Police criminalist swabbed McLean’s hands for gun powder residue at the station and the results of that test are pending.

During booking, two plastic bags containing crack cocaine were found on McLean.

The victim was transported to Boston Medical Center for treatment. He is expected to survive.

McLean is represented by attorney Gerasimos Antzoulatos.  He will return to court Sept. 15.
