Alleged Gunman Charged in Robbery, Shooting

BOSTON, Nov. 5, 2014— A Roxbury was held on high bail at his arraignment today on charges he shot a store clerk during a convenience store robbery, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

JARRIS CHARLEY (D.O.B. 4/30/93) of Roxbury was arraigned in Dorchester Municipal Court today on charges of armed robbery while masked, assault with intent to murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, unlawful possession of a firearm, and unlawful possession of ammunition.  Assistant District Attorney William Kettlewell requested bail of $250,000 and that Charley be ordered to remain under house arrest, wear a GPS monitor, stay away from the location of the crime, and stay away and have no contact with the victim or witnesses in the event he is released on bail.  Judge Debra DelVecchio set bail at $100,000 and imposed the requested conditions of release but granted the defendant permission to leave his house for employment purposes while under house arrest.

At Kettlewell’s request, DelVecchio also revoked Charley’s bail in an open case out of West Roxbury Municipal Court charging assault and battery and destruction of property. In that case, prosecutors had requested bail of $2,000 and a judge imposed $250.

Boston Police were called to the D&D Convenience Store on Dorchester Avenue for a report of a person shot at about 7:30 yesterday evening.  The store clerk, a 46-year-old male, was found suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen and rushed to Boston Medical Center. He remains hospitalized but is expected to survive.

Officers soon learned that a masked man entered the store and demanded cash, then walked behind the counter and grabbed money from the register.  He then shot the victim in the abdomen and fled.

“The evidence suggests that the gunman shot the clerk even after taking the money,” Conley said.

Officers stopped Charley on Savin Hill Avenue near the scene of the shooting.  He was identified as the shooter based on witness descriptions, surveillance images, and other evidence, prosecutors said, and his height, weight, clothing, and complexion are all consistent with that of the assailant who was captured on video.

Charley was represented by attorney Alyssa Thrasher Hackett.  He will return to court Dec. 4.
