Alleged Gunman Held in Jamaica Plain Homicide

BOSTON, Dec. 23, 2016—The man who allegedly shot and killed 28-year-old Jeffrey Kelly in Jamaica Plain this summer was held without bail at his arraignment today, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

The Suffolk County Grand Jury on Wednesday returned indictments charging AMOS CARRASQUILLO (D.O.B. 7/5/88) of Dorchester with first-degree murder and unlawful possession of a firearm. Carrasquillo was apprehended that night on an unrelated federal probation warrant and taken into custody on the murder charge yesterday by Boston Police at the John Joseph Moakley Federal Courthouse.

Assistant District Attorney Julie Higgins of the DA’s Homicide Unit told the court that Carrasquillo and Kelly were known to each other, and that Carrasquillo had shown signs of hostility toward the victim in the days preceding the Aug. 27 homicide.

The investigation by Boston Police homicide detectives on the street and Suffolk prosecutors behind the closed doors of the Suffolk County Grand Jury revealed that Carrasquillo had threatened and physically assaulted Kelly, who used a wheelchair and was a habitué of the 7-11 on Centre Street.

The investigation further revealed that Carrasquillo was in the area of that convenience store for several hours prior to the early morning homicide, at one point trailing Kelly in a vehicle. When Kelly went into the store, prosecutors say, Carrasquillo approached and shot him as he exited, killing him.

Surveillance footage, phone records, witness statements, and additional evidence all point to Carrasquillo, said Higgins, who added that the ballistics evidence at the scene suggested a single gun fired by a single shooter.

Carrasquillo was represented today by attorney Bernard Grossberg and will return to court on Jan. 26.
