Alleged Gunman Held in Winthrop Street Homicide

BOSTON, Feb. 16, 2018—The man who allegedly shot and killed 37-year-old Tarek Mroue on Winthrop Street this week was held without bail at his arraignment in Roxbury Municipal Court today, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

TYRONE WORRELL (D.O.B. 7/5/78) of Dorchester is accused of shooting Mroue, killing him, on the evening of Feb. 14. Boston Police arrested Worrell shortly after the homicide. Early the next morning, he represented that he had swallowed a quantity of heroin. Though his belongings had previously been secured, he was hospitalized for observation in an abundance of caution and then released for arraignment.

Evidence developed during the past two days suggests that Worrell was involved in a dispute with another motorist on Wednesday evening. That dispute continued on Winthrop Street, where Worrell allegedly slashed the tires of the second vehicle. Worrell then allegedly left the scene and returned a short time later. He allegedly produced a firearm and fired multiple shots into the vehicle, striking and killing Mroue.

A witness at the scene gave police a description of the assailant and his vehicle. Minutes later, Boston Police spotted that vehicle about a half-mile away and took him into custody.

“When we consider the toll of gun violence in America, let’s not focus solely on events in Florida and Nevada,” Conley said. “We can’t lose sight of the preventable tragedies that unfold every day in big cities across the country, where fistfights and traffic disputes can turn deadly because someone has access to a weapon they have no business possessing.”

Worrell was represented by attorney John Galvin. He returns to court on March 14.
