BOSTON, Oct. 6, 2014—A suspect in the June shooting death of Craig Marriro is expected to be arraigned next week after his indictment by the Suffolk County Grand Jury, District Attorney Daniel F. Conley and Boston Police Commissioner William B. Evans said.

DERRICK WOOD (D.O.B. 1/10/82) of Dorchester is charged with first-degree murder, unlawful possession of a firearm, and unlawful possession of ammunition. The indictments were returned on Aug. 26 and Wood is expected to be arraigned on Oct. 14.

In addition to a warrant charging him with Marriro’s murder, Wood remains held on $250,000 cash bail imposed at his June 9 arraignment in Roxbury Municipal Court, where he was charged only with gun offenses based on the state of the evidence at that time. The murder charges, which supersede the earlier charges, reflect a continued investigation by Suffolk prosecutors in the Grand Jury and Boston Police detectives on the street.

Police and prosecutors say Marriro was standing on Harold Street shortly before 11:30 on the night of June 8 when a small, red, two-door car stopped nearby and an occupant fired at him, causing injuries that claimed his life at Boston Medical Center. The car sped away.

Minutes later, Boston Police in the area of Humboldt Avenue spotted a red Toyota travelling at a high rate of speed. The officers began following the car and watched as it sped through a stop sign. During the pursuit, the officers received a radio broadcast that a car matching its description may have been involved in a shooting a short time earlier.

At about this time, the officers activated their lights and the Toyota drove up onto the sidewalk, passed a tow truck that had been slowing its progress, and eventually crashed into several parked cars.

Officers observed occupants bail out of the Toyota and gave chase on foot. One occupant made good on his escape. The other – later identified as Wood – was apprehended in a driveway a short distance away.

Additional officers located a semiautomatic handgun and a loaded magazine a short distance from the car’s passenger side door. The handgun was tested and revealed to be a ballistic match to the weapon that killed Marriro.

Conley and Evans said the investigation into Marriro’s homicide remains active and ongoing. Anyone with additional information is asked to share it with Boston Police homicide detectives at 617-343-4470.
