At Car Dealership, Man Crashes Replacement for Car He Crashed Last Month

BOSTON, May 2, 2012—A Brookline man’s bail for crashing his car last month after a police chase was revoked today after he crashed another car at an Allston auto dealership, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

ENDER DURGUT (D.O.B. 7/20/72) was arraigned in Brighton District Court today on charges of larceny of a motor vehicle, malicious destruction of property, assault with a dangerous weapon, and disorderly conduct for his actions at Herb Chambers Toyota this morning.

Assistant District Attorney Cameron Merrill recommended bail in the amount of $5,000, an order that Durgut not drive while the case is open, and revocation of the defendant’s open case out of Newton District Court, where he is charged with leading police on a motor vehicle chase through three different towns before crashing.

Judge David T. Donnelly imposed prosecutors’ requested bail on the Brighton case, revoked bail on the Newton case, and ordered Durgut to undergo a mental health evaluation at Bridgewater State Hospital.

Boston Police responded to the Brighton Avenue showroom just before 10:30 this morning for a radio call, finding a black 2012 Toyota Venza and a silver 2012 Toyota Prius with body damage.

The dealership management told officers that a man later identified as Durgut had walked in and asked about buying a car to replace the one he had recently crashed. While perusing the various models on the showroom floor, Durgut allegedly entered the Venza and drove it forward, first crashing into the Prius and then into a desk before coming to rest against the showroom wall. On the other side of the wall, witnesses said, was a clerk in her sixth month of pregnancy.

Witnesses said Durgut continued to rev the engine as if trying to drive through the wall until another employee was able to turn the car off. Durgust allegedly walked out of the showroom at that point, only to be apprehended by Boston Police on Commonwealth Avenue a short time later.

At the time of his arrest, Durgut was on bail for a March 27 incident in which he fled Natick Police in a different Toyota Venza. State Police picked up the chase along Route 9, where troopers deployed “stop sticks” to bring the car to a halt in Newton; those efforts were unsuccessful. State Police positioned a cruiser across a portion of the road further ahead, and Durgus allegedly struck its rear while increasing speed. After losing its front right tire, striking the guardrail, and hitting a Brookline Police cruiser, the car came to rest on the grass and caught fire. Troopers removed him from the vehicle at that time.

Durgut is represented in his new case by attorney William Concannon. He will return to court on May 21.
