Authorities Make ID in Charles River Death

Authorities have identified the woman who died in the Charles River early Thursday morning, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said today.

Several members of the public contacted State Police General Headquarters and members of the Suffolk County State Police Detective Unit yesterday after seeing media reports describing the appearance and clothing of the deceased. Based on those tips, State Police detectives assigned to Conley’s office made contact with the woman’s family. A positive identification was made late yesterday.

The woman was identified as a 21-year-old Dorchester resident. Her name is not being released and her death is being treated as a non-homicide.

“We’re grateful to those members of the media whose help was invaluable in identifying this young woman,” Conley said. “Without it, her family could have spent days and possibly weeks waiting and wondering. Our thoughts and prayers are with her loved ones.”

State Police assigned to Troop H and members of the State Police Underwater Recovery Unit responded to the Harvard Bridge, which traverses the Charles River along Massachusetts Avenue, on Oct. 20 following a 6:20 a.m. call. The woman’s remains were recovered a short time later, but she had not been carrying any identification.

Conley’s office released her physical description, an inventory of her clothing, and, later, photographs of certain jewelry she had been wearing. Those descriptions were picked up by the Boston media, leading directly to her identification.
