Authorities Urge Caution on Esplanade

Authorities are renewing their call for caution along the Esplanade today after a report of a sexual assault early Friday morning.

State Police detectives assigned to Troop H and the Suffolk DA’s office responded to a local college Friday evening after a student reported to her campus police department that she had been assaulted at about 1:00 Friday morning in the area of the Silber Way footbridge. The student suffered no physical injuries during the incident and was able to flee on foot.

The victim provided investigators with a general description of the assailant as an adult black male standing between 6’ and 6’4”. While there is no immediate evidence to suggest that this individual is the one responsible for three unsolved attacks on the Esplanade in 2007 and in South Boston in 2006, police and prosecutors are reviewing the facts for potential links as a matter of course.

Pedestrians, cyclists, and others are reminded to stay alert and, whenever possible, to travel in groups when visiting the Esplanade at night. The victims of any crime are asked to call 911 in an emergency, and the survivors of sexual violence in Suffolk County can also call the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center’s 24-hour hotline at 800-841-8371. The Boston Area Rape Crisis Center provides medical advocacy, legal services, counseling, and other services to victims of rape and sexual assault.

Anyone with knowledge of Esplanade or Moakley Park assaults is urged to contact the Massachusetts State Police Barracks in Boston at 617-727-6780, call the toll-free Boston Police CrimeStoppers tip line at 1-800-494-TIPS, or text the word “TIP” to CRIME (27463).
