Bail Revoked, $50k Imposed in Dorchester Sexual Assaults

A suspect in two early morning assaults on women in Dorchester had his open bail revoked and was held on an additional $50,000 cash, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

Judge Annette Forde imposed that order at the Dorchester District Court arraignment of WALTER MAINS (D.O.B. 2/12/80) for two Sunday morning incidents. In the first, Mains is charged with assault and annoying or accosting a person of the opposite sex; in the second, he is charged with armed robbery, assault with intent to rape, and indecent assault and battery.

At the time of his arrest, Mains was free on bail for a September incident for which he is charged with trespassing and disorderly conduct. That bail was revoked today. Mains was previously charged in Roxbury court in connection with a 2009 attempted rape; while that case was pending, the victim chose not to take part in the proceedings, leaving prosecutors without sufficient evidence to proceed further. That case was ultimately dismissed. Mains is additionally on probation for a pair of 2009 purse snatchings, having served 18 months behind bars and receiving two years of probation.

Mains was identified as a suspect amid an ongoing and extremely active investigation. The incidents for which he was arraigned today took place at about 1:40 a.m. on Savin Hill Avenue and about 3:00 a.m. on Harbor View Street.

In the first incident, Mains allegedly accosted the victim and briefly chased her before a passerby intervened and walked her to a nearby store from which she called police.

In the second incident, Mains allegedly approached a woman, produced a gun, and demanded cash before groping her and attempting to further sexually assault her. That woman escaped and also called police.
Mains was represented by attorney Michelle Troiano. He will return to court on Oct. 13.
