Boyfriend, Bystander Foil South End Purse Snatching

A South End man and an unknown bystander foiled a purse snatching this week, grabbing two alleged perps and handing them over to Boston Police before they could flee with the victim’s handbag, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

DEREK BOUCHARD (D.O.B. 11/18/78) of Milton and SEAN RUMSEY (D.O.B. 10/20/77) of South Boston were arraigned yesterday in Boston Municipal Court on charges of unarmed robbery and assault and battery. Judge Tracy-Lee Lyons set their bails at $1,500 each; Assistant District Attorney Justyna Miller had recommended $2,000 each.

Miller told the court that both men had open probation warrants at the time of their arrests. Bouchard has breaking and entering convictions in Fall River, Lynn, Roxbury, and Woburn, Miller said, while Rumsey has Boston convictions for shoplifting and receiving stolen goods.

Prosecutors say Boston Police were called to the area of West Newton and Tremont streets at about 2:00 Sunday afternoon. They arrived to find Rumsey being held face down on the sidewalk by a 43-year-old neighborhood resident and Bouchard being detained by another man who left once police arrived. Bouchard was holding a purse with a broken strap. A third person near the scene, also a South Ender, identified himself as having made the initial 911 call.

“We don’t want anyone to put themselves in harm’s way to stop a crime, but stories like this are a reminder that Boston is full of people who care about their neighbors and won’t hesitate to do the right thing,” Conley said. “They’re the quiet heroes who make this city great.”

The officers soon learned that the 43-year-old had just parked his car and that his girlfriend was taking groceries from the trunk while he made a quick trip to a store around the corner. At about that time, Bouchard allegedly ran up and grabbed the woman’s purse. After a brief struggle, Bouchard allegedly pushed her to the ground, took her purse, and ran toward Shawmut Street, where he was intercepted by the unknown Samaritan. The victim’s boyfriend ran back to the scene and apprehended Rumsey, who was allegedly acting as a lookout.

Bouchard was represented by attorney Kevin Ruderman and Rumsey by attorney Susan Neff. Both will return to court on Dec. 7.
