Brighton Couple Charged after Guns, Drugs Are Recovered During Search Warrant

BOSTON, Jan. 29, 2015—Two Brighton residents were held on high bail during their arraignment this week after Boston Police discovered drugs, guns, and more than $4,000 in their home, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said today.

SAMUEL FERRERA (D.O.B. 12/23/84) and JAMIE FRANCES SANTANA (D.O.B. 1/25/86) were arraigned Monday in Brighton Municipal Court after their arrests Friday by Boston Police officers who executed a search warrant at the couple’s Litchfield Street apartment Friday.

Ferrera was arraigned on two counts each of possession with intent to distribute a Class C substance, possession with intent to distribute a Class B substance, and unlawful possession of ammunition, and single counts of possession with intent to distribute a Class D substance, unlawful possession of a sawed-off shotgun, unlawful possession of a firearm, and possessing a firearm in the commission of a felony.  At the request of Assistant District Attorney Kaushal Rana, Judge David Donnelly set bail in the amount of $75,000.

Santana was arraigned on two counts each of possession with intent to distribute a Class B substance and unlawful possession of ammunition, and single counts of possession with intent to distribute a Class C substance, distribution of a Class C substance as a subsequent offense, possession with intent to distribute a Class D substance, unlawful possession of a sawed-off shotgun, unlawful possession of a firearm, possessing a firearm in the commission of a felony, and unlawful possession of chemical mace.  Donnelly granted Rana’s request that bail be set at $50,000.

Boston Police officers entered the Litchfield apartment to execute a search warrant shortly after 9:00 p.m. Friday.  Inside, officers discovered a sawed-off New England Firearms Pardner Pump shotgun, a KARN P380 firearm, a Ruger GP 100 .357 Magnum, a stun gun, ammunition, and feeding devices.

Police also recovered several glass mason jars containing marijuana, a baggie containing a white crystal, various pills, one mason jar containing a brown oil believed to be butane hash oil – a Class C substance derived from marijuana – $4,193 in cash, a drug ledger, digital scales, and other items associated with drug distribution, prosecutors said.

As officers searched the unit, Santana arrived at the scene and attempted to enter the apartment.  She allegedly made statements to police indicating that she was aware there was marijuana inside the apartment and she and Ferrera had brought the shotgun into Massachusetts from Maryland where they previously lived. A canister of chemical mace was found inside her purse, prosecutors said.  Santana was placed under arrest at that time; Ferrera had been taken into custody prior to the search of the apartment.

On Jan. 20, another Brighton woman was arraigned after Boston Police discovered evidence of butane hash oil manufacturing in her Weitz Street apartment. TENZIN PHUNTSOK (D.O.B. 7/25/86) was arraigned on seven counts of possession of a Class D substance with intent to distribute and single counts of possession of Class C and Class E substances with intent to distribute. Detectives recovered quantities of psilocybin mushrooms, marijuana, and butane hash oil, along with baggies, grinders, a scale, chemistry equipment, and six canisters of butane from her residence. Her bail was set at $5,000.

Ferrera and Santana were represented by attorneys Rick Dyer and Paul Mishkin.  Both return to court March 2.
