Brute Farce: Dot Man Charged With Damaging Cash Register

The man sought since last week for allegedly shoving a cash register off the counter of a local fast food restaurant surrendered to MBTA Transit Police today and was promptly arraigned for that offense, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

TIMOTHY CHACE (D.O.B. 4/14/83) of Dorchester was arraigned this afternoon in the Boston Municipal Court, where Assistant District Attorney Larry Bates recommended bail of $500. Judge Thomas C. Horgan set bail at $200 and ordered Chace to stay away from South Station, where the offense took place.

MBTA Transit Police assigned to the commuter hub responded to the McDonalds on Friday to take a report on the incident, which occurred just after midnight on March 1. The manager of the establishment reported that an unknown male had approached the counter and pushed the menu, cash register, and donation box to the floor. The cash register was damaged during the incident.

Using stills from a surveillance camera, Transit Police created a wanted poster and distributed it across the greater Boston area. On Sunday evening, they received an anonymous phone tip identifying the suspect on the poster as Timothy Chace and giving his employment information.

Transit Police detectives visited the Waterfront restaurant where Chace was said to have worked, only to learn that he was no longer employed there. Using personnel information, however, detectives obtained an address linked with the suspect. A relative at that address agreed to have Chace contact investigators when they next spoke.

At about 12:15 this afternoon, Chace walked into the MBTA Transit Police Headquarters to surrender. After being read his Miranda rights, he allegedly acknowledged that the surveillance imagery depicted him shoving the cash register and other items off the South Station McDonalds counter early Thursday morning.

Chace was represented by attorney Krista Larsen. He will return to court on April 10.
