Cambridge Man Held in Assault Near River’s Edge

A Cambridge man’s open bail was revoked and new bail was set at $50,000 following his arraignment for allegedly sexually assaulting a young woman near the Charles River after meeting her in Harvard Square last night, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

JOSEPH LEE BROWN (D.O.B. 6/22/89), who also goes by the name “Vocals,” was arraigned this morning in Brighton District Court on a rape charge stemming from the attack, which occurred in the area of Soldier’s Field Road near the John W. Weeks Footbridge.

At the request of Assistant District Attorney Cameron Merrill, Judge David T. Donnelly revoked Brown’s bail on an open assault and larceny case, also out of Brighton court. Brown was further ordered to have no contact with the victim.

The investigation by State Police detectives assigned to Conley’s office suggests that Brown was known to the victim, a 19-year-old from Brighton, and that they met up in Harvard Square earlier yesterday evening. They walked to the river to watch the fireworks display.

During the course of the evening, the victim told investigators, Brown made repeated advances toward her, which she said she turned down. While on the Boston side of the river, Brown allegedly pushed her to the ground and raped her. The victim left the scene on foot, calling a friend who in turn called 911, and later admitted herself to Cambridge Hospital for a rape kit and treatment of a minor head injury she sustained during the attack.

Cambridge Police soon located and apprehended Brown and transported him to the State Police barracks because the area of the assault is state property. In interviews with State troopers, Brown allegedly acknowledged sexual activity with the young woman but gave multiple conflicting accounts of the incident.

Based on the suspect’s age and appearance, as well as his alleged actions and modus operandi last night, investigators do not believe at this time that the assault is linked to a series of unsolved attacks along the Esplanade in the summers of 2007 and 2009. Those attacks remain under investigation by Boston Police, State Police, and the Suffolk DA’s Sexual Assault Unit.

Brown was represented by attorney Jason Chan. He will return to court on July 21.
