CHASE SUSPECT SENT FOR EVALUATION

A Framingham man was ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation following his arraignment today for allegedly trying to run over two pedestrians on Tremont Street and then leading Massachusetts State Police on a wild, high-speed chase.

Boston Municipal Court Judge Annette Forde remanded ALEJANDRO SERRA (D.O.B. 3/30/81) to Bridgewater State Hospital this afternoon during a hearing in which he was formally charged with more than a dozen assault and motor vehicle offenses for his alleged actions before and during yesterday’s pursuit.

In addition to ordering the evaluation, Forde also revoked Serra’s bail on an open assault and battery case out of Roxbury District Court and set $5,000 on an open trespassing case out of the Boston Municipal Court.

Assistant District Attorney Andrius Knasas told the court that a State trooper was flagged down by an older adult male with a young boy near the intersection of Columbus Avenue and Wellington Street. The man told the trooper that a motorist – later identified as Serra – had swore at and threatened him when the man told him to stop swearing so loudly. Serra allegedly almost struck the pair as he drove off.

The trooper searched the area, located Serra’s gray Mazda 3 on Tremont Street near West Newton Street, and attempted to stop the vehicle. Serra allegedly refused to stop, driving north away from the trooper.

Serra allegedly stopped at the Marginal Road stop light, where the trooper exited his cruiser and ordered Serra out of the car. Instead, Serra allegedly accelerated, nearly striking the trooper and two other pedestrians. Taking a right onto Marginal Road and then heading westbound on Route 90, Serra allegedly fled the first trooper and then multiple State Police cruisers responding to his radio calls.

Serra was apprehended in Framingham after several efforts to stop his Mazda with State Police vehicles.

Serra was represented by attorney Michael D’Amore. He will return to court on July 27.
