CHELSEA, STATE POLICE PROBE HAWTHORNE STREET SHOOTING

Chelsea Police and State Police homicide detectives assigned to Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley’s Office are investigating a shooting on Hawthorne Street yesterday that sent one man to the hospital in critical condition.

The victim, a 53-year-old Jamaica Plain resident, was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital moments after yesterday’s noontime shooting. His condition has since been upgraded to stable after emergency surgery.

Because of the seriousness of the man’s injuries and the possibility that they could prove fatal, State Police were called in to lead the investigation. State Police homicide detectives lead all death investigations in Chelsea with the assistance and support of Chelsea Police, who responded to the scene in the aftermath of the shooting.

Investigators say the victim was struck by multiple gunshots in an alley near 12 Hawthorne St. shortly after noontime yesterday. They are exploring a possible connection to a prior 911 call for a domestic disturbance at that address, and the incident does not appear to be random.

Anyone with information on the incident or the perpetrator is urged to contact investigators on the confidential Chelsea Police Tip Line at 617-466-4880, by texting the word “CHELSEA” followed by their message to TIP411 (847411), on the Chelsea Police web site at www.ChelseaPolice.com, or by calling the Suffolk County State Police Detective Unit at 617-727-8817.
