CONLEY’S “BASKETBALL FOR PEACE” TO JUMP OFF NEXT WEEK

Following the success of last year’s tournament, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley’s second annual Basketball for Peace event is coming to Dorchester next week with local businesses pitching in and a former Boston Celtics player making a return appearance.

Employees of Best Buy will be on hand with complimentary gift cards for every young player and representatives of The Olive Garden will provide food and drinks for up to 100 attendees. Former Boston Celtics guard and Hub native Dana Barros will join in the fun as well. The event is scheduled for the afternoon of Feb. 18 at the Lilla G. Fredericks Middle School, located at 270 Columbia Rd. in Dorchester.

Inspired by the DA’s Soccer for Peace tournament, held each summer since 2003, Basketball for Peace was conceived as a way to bring schoolchildren the same social and athletic interaction with law enforcement during the winter months. Both events offer community residents the chance to meet and play with prosecutors, victim advocates, and law enforcement partners in a safe, fun, athletic environment.

“Teamwork and sportsmanship are values that go far beyond athletics,” Conley said. “They increase your chances of success academically, in business, and in day to day life. I want to bring those values to kids and show them that when it comes to keeping them safe, we’re all on the same team.”

Scheduled to coincide with school vacation week, the event will run from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. next Thursday, with registration from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Conley will welcome the assembled youth prior to the start of the tournament, Barros will offer encouraging remarks, and the game will follow shortly afterwards.

Partnering with Conley’s office in the event are Project RIGHT (Rebuild and Improve Grove Hall Together), the Dorchester Youth Collaborative, Revere-based CAPIC (Community Action Programs Inter-City) Inc., and Boston Police assigned to District 2. Every kid attending will receive a gift card donated by Best Buy and a trophy for their participation. Young participants are also eligible to win one of several raffle prizes, including autographed photographs of Boston Celtics players, gift certificates from local restaurants, or brand new Reebok sneakers.

“I’m always humbled by the generosity of our volunteers and partners,” Conley said. “When the community comes together to benefit our young people, we all win.”
