CONLEY’S OFFICE TO JOIN NATIONAL HATE CRIMES PANEL

Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley’s point prosecutor on hate crimes will join her federal counterparts at a national conference in Florida next week.

Assistant District Attorney Christina Miller, Conley’s chief of district courts and community prosecutions, will represent the Suffolk DA’s office on an Aug. 27 panel discussing hate crime prosecutions and the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009. She will join a group of assistant United States attorneys also seated on the panel.

The discussion is one of more than two dozen expected at the National LGBT Bar Association’s Lavender Law Career Fair and Conference, an annual event that draws the sharpest minds in the nation’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender legal community. Hundreds of judges, attorneys, scholars, and students are expected to attend.

Miller oversees all prosecutions in the nine district courts serving Boston, Chelsea, Revere, and Winthrop. She also acts as the point prosecutor for all hate crimes within Suffolk County. She is an ex officio chair of the Massachusetts Lesbian and Gay Bar Association and previously served for five years on its board of directors. She has also served as a co-chair of the Criminal Law Section of the Boston Bar Association.

The Hate Crimes Prevention Act gives federal prosecutors jurisdiction over crimes targeting victims because of ethnicity, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, or disability. It also allows the Department of Justice to provide financial assistance to state prosecutors, such as Conley’s office, as they tackle hate crimes.

“Members of the LGBT community have been historically underrepresented in law enforcement,” Conley said. “I’d like to change that, and just as importantly I want to ensure that we pursue equal justice for everyone in Boston, Chelsea, Revere, and Winthrop no matter who they are or how they define their families. The Hate Crimes Prevention Act can be a powerful tool for us in that pursuit. I’m proud to send Christina to this panel to share her knowledge and experience with prosecutors from across the nation.”
