Convicted Youth Coach Now Charged with Child Rape

BOSTON, Dec. 17, 2013—A former youth baseball coach already convicted of child enticement has now been charged with raping one of his young players, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

JOSE “BRUJO” ORTEGA (D.O.B. 7/4/71) of  Roslindale was arraigned Dec. 11 in West Roxbury District Court on charges of aggravated rape of a child, indecent assault and battery on a child, and indecent assault and battery. At the request of Assistant District Attorney Laura Montgomery, Judge Michael Coyne imposed $250,000 cash bail.

“Too often, the young victims of sexual abuse are afraid or ashamed to come forward,” Conley said. “As adults, we can lose sight of how difficult it can be for a child to discuss something so frightening. Parents and caregivers should know that we approach these cases with sensitivity and discretion to protect the victims from further harm, and I would urge them to let their kids know that they won’t get in trouble for disclosing something that makes them uncomfortable.”

Montgomery, assigned to the DA’s Child Protection Unit, told the court that Ortega was the manager of the Boston Broncos youth baseball league who preyed on the victim beginning when the boy was 12 or 13 years old.

Ortega allegedly groomed the boy with pornography and sexually assaulted him repeatedly between 2003, when the victim was a young teen, and 2010, when he was in his late teens. Prosecutors say Ortega used the baseball league to coerce the boy into compliance, refusing to allow him to play if he resisted Ortega’s advances and then placing him in games and praising his performance if he gave in.

The allegations arose after Ortega was charged with three counts of enticement of a child for his behavior with another young player in 2012. He was sentenced to 18 months in a house of correction followed by three years of probation for sending that teenaged boy sexualized messages through Facebook and having other forms of inappropriate – though not physical – contact with him.
