Counterfeit DVD Suspect Rewinds, Repeats History

A man already convicted of selling counterfeit movies at one coffee shop found himself under arrest again after attempting the same offense at another coffee shop last week, Suffolk County District attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

JIANFU HUANG (D.O.B. 10/8/54), formerly of Quincy but now a resident of Corona, New York, was arraigned Friday on charges of distributing a counterfeit mark – the same offense to which he pleaded guilty earlier this year. South Boston District Court Judge Michael Bolden set bail at $500 cash, the amount recommended by Assistant District Attorney Kate Clayman. Huang was also surrendered for violating the terms of his probation on the earlier case.

On August 4, Clayman told the court, Huang entered the Java House on West Broadway, produced a black canvas bag full of DVDs, and offered to sell them to a man for $5.00 each. Unfortunately for Huang, the man was a plainclothes Boston Police sergeant.

When the officer produced his badge and identified himself, Huang allegedly tried to push past him and bolt from the store. The officer got hold of him and handcuffed him, at which point Huang allegedly began to cry aloud and bang his head on the floor in frustration. Police recovered 203 DVDs of various titles in the canvas bag and $374 in cash on his person.

At the time of his arrest, Huang was under a one year suspended sentence out of Dorchester District Court, where he pleaded guilty in February for a counterfeit distribution charge first brought in October 2009. In that case, Huang was selling DVDs from a nylon bag at the Dunkin’ Donuts on Dorchester Avenue when a Boston Police officer walked in. When he spotted the officer, Huang allegedly tried to hide the bag, only to have several of them fall on the floor. When inventoried, the bag contained 339 DVDs of various recent releases, all of them counterfeit.

Huang will return to court on Oct. 4. He was represented by attorney Arnie Cohen.
