DA Conley Heading Back to School – This Time, With More Books

BOSTON, June 6, 2012—After the overwhelming positive response to his last trip delivering books to youngsters at a Dorchester school, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel is returning this week with reading material for hundreds more students.

Conley and members of his staff will deliver 250 children’s books to Principal Teresa Harvey-Jackson and the kids of the John Marshall Elementary School’s first through fifth grades. They will be joined by Carlos Valente of Thrift Recycling, which works with a non-profit organization that provides hundreds of thousands of books each year to schools, libraries, and youth groups at no cost.

“Literacy is a fundamental key to success,” Conley said. “Children who read and are read to at a young age have an advantage they carry through their entire lives. I want to push that message to the kids, their families, and the public.”

Each week since last fall, members of Conley’s office have spent a morning at the Marshall School reading to the students of Ms. Beazer’s and Ms. Ordonez’ first-grade classes. Last month, Conley joined in the fun and brought books for every student student to demonstrate the importance of literacy.

“The response was great,” he said, “so we’re expanding it to include the entire first and second grades. Every child deserves a chance to learn to love reading.”

Tomorrow’s event begins at 8:30 a.m. and will run for about an hour. It will be held in the cafeteria of the Marshall School, located at 35 Westville St. in Dorchester. Media are invited to attend.
