DA Conley to Visit Kids in Chelsea, Roslindale

BOSTON, July 17, 2012—Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley will visit kids and teens in Chelsea and Roslindale tomorrow for separate events intended to enhance their safety and ensure their success.

Conley will travel first to Casserly House Summer Educational Camp, a non-profit youth center in Roslindale that teaches the scholastic building blocks of computer literacy, reading, and the arts. Fifteen Boston students between the second and sixth grades are enrolled in the camp, which is funded in part this year by a $5,000 award from Conley’s Asset Forfeiture Community Reinvestment Program.

Conley will arrive at about 2:30, observe the program in action, and offer some words of encouragement to students and faculty. The trip is expected to last about half an hour. The award helped pay for basic school and computer supplies for children identified as needing extra help to succeed in school.

The funds come from cash and assets seized during narcotics prosecutions by Conley’s office during the prior year. Casserly House was one of 15 non-profit youth service agencies from across Suffolk County to receive AFCRP funding.

At 6:00 p.m., the DA will head to Chelsea High School to speak to a group of teens and parents about internet safety, cyberbullying, and related topics. Conley will give opening remarks and and Youth Safety Coordinator Jacquelyn Lamont will discuss some of the risks kids face in an online world, including physical safety and high-tech harassment.

The Chelsea event is expected to run about two hours and will look at social media web sites, the state’s anti-bullying laws, schools’ responsibilities to students, and parental involvement.

Casserly House is located at 42 Stellman Rd. in Roslindale. Chelsea High School is located at 299 Everett Ave. in Chelsea. Media are welcome to attend both events.
