BOSTON, June 10, 2013—Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley today invited area non-profit organizations that work with kids and teens to apply for his annual series of free cash awards to provide the young people of Boston, Chelsea, Revere, and Winthrop with constructive alternatives to crime and drug use.

The annual grants, which this year total an estimated $50,000, are disbursed from the DA’s Asset Forfeiture Community Reinvestment Program, which takes cash and assets seized from drug dealers and awards them to Suffolk County organizations that work to help young people.

“There’s no shortage of bad influences on young people today,” Conley said. “Our most fundamental duty is to serve the victims of crime, and part of attaining that goal is preventing violence from occurring in the first place. Getting kids involved in positive activities is a huge part of that prevention effort. Whether it’s supporting their involvement in sports, the arts, or education, we’re doing good things with bad money.”

Award recipients will be announced in the fall.

State law allows up to 10 percent of money from the auctions of dealers’ property and confiscated funds to be returned to the community. Since taking office, Conley has awarded thousands of dollars each year to dozens of youth groups, community centers, and social service agencies.
