DA SEEKS DANGEROUSNESS HEARING FOR ALLEGED DV ATTACKER

A Revere man was held without bail yesterday after Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley’s office moved for a hearing to prove that no conditions of release would ensure the safety of the Chelsea man he allegedly stabbed or the community at large.

At the request of Assistant District Attorney Nick Brandt, a Chelsea District Court judge ordered MARCO BELTRAN (D.O.B. 9/12/65) held at his arraignment on charges of attempted murder, breaking and entering at night with the intent to commit a felony, and aggravated assault and battery. The charges stem from Beltran’s alleged attack upon the 32-year-old victim in his Chestnut Street home late Monday night.

Beltran will be held at least until later this week, when Suffolk prosecutors expect to conduct a “dangerousness hearing” under Ch. 276, Sect. 58A, of the Massachusetts General Laws, which allows a for a defendant to be held without bail for up to three months if prosecutors can provide “clear and convincing evidence that no conditions of release will reasonably assure the safety of any other person or the community.”

Brandt told Judge James LaMothe that Beltran was in violation of a civil restraining order when he allegedly made his way into the residence of his ex-wife’s new partner and hid in the bedroom. When the victim and his girlfriend entered, Beltran allegedly produced a razor or similar sharp, bladed implement and slashed the victim several times before fleeing.

The victim sustained five slash wounds to his forehead, shoulder, back, neck, and torso. Though serious, the injuries are not life-threatening and the victim was treated at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Chelsea Police responded to the scene moments after the attack. After ascertaining the suspect’s identity, they notified all department personnel and the police departments of neighboring cities and towns that Beltran was at large. Shortly thereafter, Revere Police found Beltran’s Chevrolet Silverado parked on Malden Street and, minutes later, took him into custody. Chelsea Police took custody of him and transported him back to Chelsea Police headquarters.

“I can’t think of a case more appropriate for a dangerousness hearing than this one,” Conley said. “It’s a horrifying reminder that domestic violence can take many forms but always has its roots in control, domination, and fear.”

Victims of domestic violence or their loved ones should call 911 in an emergency. SafeLink, a statewide domestic violence hotline, can be reached at 877-785-2020.

“You don’t have to live in a violent relationship,” Conley said, “and you don’t have to leave it all by yourself when people are ready and willing to help.”

Beltran will return to court on Friday for his dangerousness hearing.
