DEADLY MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION SLATED FOR TRIAL THIS WEEK

Jury selection is scheduled to begin today for the trial of a Mattapan man whose driving was allegedly so aggressive that it caused a crash that claimed one young woman’s life and injured three others, including a 6-month-old girl.

JASON BAILEY (D.O.B. 8/18/78) is charged with involuntary manslaughter and leaving the scene of the collision that killed 18-year-old Porsche Hubbard on Blue Hill Avenue in Dorchester during the early morning hours of Aug. 3, 2007. Prosecutors say Bailey was driving his SUV behind the victims’ sedan in a manner that forced the victims to accelerate and ultimately lose control before crashing into a light pole and a tree.

Also injured in the crash were Hubbard’s 25-year-old friend, who was driving; Hubbard’s 10-year-old niece; and a 6-month-old girl strapped into a baby seat who flew about 30’ from the collision before coming to rest face down in the street’s outbound right-hand lane.

Investigators believe Bailey and the victims’ group were unknown to each other prior to the morning of the crash. A short time before the collision, Bailey allegedly had words with the women in the sedan at a gas station. When they left that gas station, he allegedly began to chase them for several blocks and accelerate into their sedan’s rear bumper. At about 2:40 a.m., the sedan’s driver lost control of the vehicle, struck the curb at Arbutus Street, skidded sideways, and struck a light pole and tree on the median strip.

Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Hickman is prosecuting the case. Kara Hayes is the district attorney’s victim-witness advocate. Bailey is represented by attorney Steven Sack. Judge Patrick Brady is presiding in courtroom 815 of Suffolk Superior Court.

Once a jury is selected, its members will take a view of the relevant scenes. That view is tentatively expected tomorrow.
