Death Investigation Under Way at Longfellow Bridge

BOSTON, Dec. 9, 2013—State Police detectives assigned to Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley’s office are investigating the unattended death of a man underneath the Longfellow Bridge.

Construction workers on the Boston side of the span came upon the man’s remains and notified State Police shortly after 11:00 this morning. The Suffolk County State Police Detective Unit, along with uniformed troopers and the Crime Scene Services Section, responded to the area because the bridge carries a State roadway and the river beneath it is a State waterway.

The man’s remains were discovered in the rafters beneath the bridge in an area known to police as a spot where homeless people sometimes sleep. The deceased has been tentatively identified as a 43-year-old man whose last known address was a Boston homeless shelter. There were no outward signs of trauma or foul play, but the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of his death. Attempts to locate and notify the man’s family are under way.
