Dorchester Man Charged With Carrying Assault Rifle

A Dorchester man was charged today with a slew of offenses stemming from his arrest for allegedly carrying an assault rifle on Ballou Avenue, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

Assistant District Attorney Brendan Cox recommended that MOHAMED ALI BILE (D.O.B. 1/1/85) be held on $150,000 cash bail at his arraignment today on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, unlawfully carrying a loaded firearm, unlawfully discharging a firearm within 500’ of a dwelling, unlawfully carrying a rifle on a public way, and unlawful possession of a large-capacity feeding device. Because of prior convictions for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, Bile is additionally charged as a Level I armed career criminal.

Dorchester District Court Judge set bail at $50,000 cash bail. US Immigrations and Customs Enforcement lodged a detainer against him, however, meaning he will remain in custody even if he posts bail.

Boston Police responded to a radio call for a man in a black hooded sweatshirt carrying a rifle in the area of 47 Ballou Ave. at about 5:45 Saturday morning. As they arrived at the scene, they saw Bile walking toward Norfolk Street. When Bile saw their marked cruiser, he allegedly bolted into a back yard, jumped a fence into the rear of a Jones Avenue address, and then jumped one more fence before being apprehended. Boston Police recovered from the rear of that Jones Avenue address an assault rifle believed to be an AK-47 with a collapsible stock and large-capacity magazine.

The officers read Bile his Miranda rights and asked for his license to carry a firearm. Bile allegedly stated he didn’t have a gun. When asked why he was running, he allegedly stated he thought someone was trying to shoot him.

Boston Police soon received information that a person wearing a black hooded sweatshirt was seen pulling a rifle from a bag and firing a single round into the ground nearby. Based on that information, Boston Police deployed a K-9 unit, which hit on a spent shell casing on Ballou Avenue. Nearby was a two-inch hole in the ground, consistent with the result of a bullet being fired into it. Also nearby was a black trash bag.

Bile was represented by attorney Nancy Caplan. He will return to court on Dec. 6.
