BOSTON, Dec. 20, 2013— A 17-year-old was arraigned today after he bragged to classmates about having a gun and assaulted a Boston police officer, District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

The Dorchester teen, whose name is not being released due to his age, was arraigned in the juvenile session of Dorchester District Court on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm, assault and battery on a police officer, and resisting arrest.  At the request of Assistant District Attorney Courtney Doherty, Clerk Ellen Coughlin set bail in the amount of $10,000 and order the defendant to stay away from the location where the incident occurred.

According to prosecutors, Boston Police assigned to the Jeremiah E. Burke High School were notified shortly after 2:00 yesterday afternoon that the teen had made statements to other students that he was carrying a gun in his backpack.

Officers located the student inside a classroom.  The teen became tense and combative as the officers approached and refused verbal commands, prosecutors said.  He then reached into a backpack and was physically brought to the ground by officers.  During a violent struggle with police, the teen bit one officer on the left wrist.

Students and staff were cleared from the classroom to ensure their safety.

Officers located an unloaded revolver inside the teen’s backpack.  The revolver had been painted black, pink, and white, which obscured the make, model, and serial number.

During his struggle with officers, the teen sustained a laceration to his head that was treated by Boston EMS.

He is represented by attorney La Mer Kyle-Griffiths.  He will return to court Monday.
