Driver Charged in Pedestrian’s Death

BOSTON, Sept. 6, 2013—A Dorchester woman has been charged with motor vehicle homicide and other offenses in connection with the death last night of 63-year-old Vielisha Pullum, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

CHRISTINA MARTINEZ (D.O.B. 7/25/92) was arraigned today in Roxbury District Court on charges of motor vehicle homicide, leaving the scene of an accident causing death, and operating a motor vehicle in violation of a license restriction for driving without wearing her prescription glasses.

Judge D. Lloyd MacDonald set bail at $1,000 and ordered Martinez not to drive while her case is pending. Her driver’s license, which was in effect last night, has now been suspended, prosecutors said.

Martinez allegedly struck Pullum near the intersection of Northampton and Washington streets at about 9:00 p.m. as Pullum crossed the street. Martinez then allegedly drove her grey Toyota Corolla away from the scene without calling 911 and parked it at her Draper Street residence.

Witnesses at the scene called for help and provided Boston Police with the suspect vehicle’s license plate number. Detectives ran the vehicle’s registration, travelled to Martinez’ home, and spoke with her. She allegedly made statements taking responsibility for the collision.

Michael Schultz is the DA’s assigned victim-witness advocate. Martinez is represented by attorney Dennis Benzan. She is scheduled to return to court on Oct. 23.
