DRIVER IN BRIGHTON CRASH ORDERED TO SURRENDER LICENSE

The driver of a car that struck and severely injured a 35-year-old Brighton father was ordered to surrender her driver’s license and not operate a motor vehicle while her criminal case is pending, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said today.

In addition to setting those conditions if CATHY BERGIN-AUGUST (D.O.B. 11/19/61) of Watertown makes $1,000 cash bail, Brighton District Court Judge David T. Donnelly told the defendant to report weekly to the Department of Probation.

Assistant District Attorney John Seed, the supervising prosecutor at the Brighton courthouse, told Donnelly that Bergin-August was operating a 2009 Toyota Yaris at about 8:00 yesterday morning when she struck the victim just after he placed his 1-year-old son into a car seat near 533 Cambridge St.

Seed also told the court that Bergin-August left the scene of the collision and was stopped by Boston Police assisted by multiple civilian witnesses – one of whom actually followed her vehicle while leaning on his horn and shouting at her to pull over.

Responding emergency medical technicians transported the victim to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he underwent emergency brain surgery for serious head trauma. Boston Police transported members of the victim’s family to the hospital to be by his side.

Bergin-August’s vehicle was transported to Boston Police headquarters with front end damage and a cracked windshield; a routine inventory of the vehicle turned up a bottle of prescription sedatives with a label warning users to use caution when operating machinery.

Seed told the court that, although the defendant is charged with negligent operation of a motor vehicle and leaving the scene of an accident causing personal injury, prosecutors would seek additional bail if the victim’s condition deteriorates.

Bergin-August is represented by attorney J.W. Carney, Jr. She will return to court on Sept. 8.
