Eastie Man Charged in Beating Near Tunnel

An East Boston man has been charged with taking part in a brutal beating and stabbing near the entrance to the Sumner Tunnel last week, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

ANTHONY LEMUS (D.O.B. 5/5/92) was arraigned Friday in East Boston District Court on charges of armed assault with intent to murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon for the Aug. 10 mob attack on a 21-year-old East Boston man. Assistant District Attorney Erik Bennett recommended that Lemus be held on $50,000 cash bail; Judge Roberto Ronquillo, Jr., set bail at $25,000.

Boston Police responded to the area of 81 Porter St. in East Boston early Wednesday afternoon for a report of an attack in progress. They arrived to find State troopers performing first aid on the victim a short distance away near the Sumner Tunnel tollbooths. The victim had sustained multiple stab wounds and blunt trauma. Police learned that the assailants, believed to be a group of four males, had set upon the man, stabbed and beat him with a hammer and a baseball bat, and fled the scene in a dark colored sport-utility vehicle.

The victim was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital with serious injuries; he is expected to survive. His vehicle was towed to Boston Police Headquarters, where it was tested for fingerprints and other evidence. Investigators later made contact with a witness who identified Lemus from a photo array as one of the group that stabbed and beat the victim.

Based on the evidence developed thus far, Boston Police obtained a warrant for Lemus’ arrest and began searching for him. On the evening of Aug. 11, Lemus surrendered himself to police at the District 7 station.

Lemus was represented by attorney Anthony Lochiatto. He will return to court on Sept. 2.
