Evaluation Ordered for Woman Who Allegedly Killed Uncle

BOSTON, Oct. 26, 2015—A woman who allegedly shot and killed her uncle, 49-year-old Clive Francis, was ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation at her arraignment today on a murder charge, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

YVONNE LEWIS, 36, is accused of shooting Davis on Saturday afternoon at the Hyde Park home of a relative with whom she had been staying. After she spoke with the West Roxbury Municipal Court clinician, Judge Kathleen Coffey ordered the 20-day evaluation at a secure facility.

Assistant District Attorney Ian Polumbaum told the court that Lewis had been staying at the Wood Avenue residence since moving back from Georgia earlier this year. She had been reclusive and acting erratically, Polumbaum said, so relatives called Francis, believing that their relationship and Francis’ personality would calm her down.

Francis came over, went up to see Lewis, and came back down with broken glass from a mirror. He went back upstairs with a vacuum cleaner, Polumbaum said.

What happened next was drowned out by the sound of a television, but prosecutors say Lewis shot Francis in the head, killing him. He was found mortally wounded when a family member went upstairs to check on him. The family member found an empty holster in the room as well. Francis was rushed to Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where he died of his injury.

Lewis allegedly stole Francis’ vehicle, inside of which was a cell phone. Boston Police tracked the signal from that phone to a hotel in Peabody. Lewis was not a registered guest at that hotel, but she was found there curled up in a hallway.

Kerry Kolditz is the DA’s assigned victim-witness advocate. Lewis was represented by attorney Jeffrey Karp. She will return to court on Nov. 16.
