FINGERPRINTS POINT TO DORCHESTER MAN IN BANK ROBBERY

A convicted bank robber was fingered as the alleged stickup man at a Dorchester credit union after Massachusetts State Police investigators recovered his prints on a note handed to the teller, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said today.

PERRY LEARNING, a.k.a. PERRY HAMILTON (D.O.B. 3/13/81), was arraigned Tuesday in Dorchester District Court on a single count of unarmed robbery. Judge Robert E. Baylor ordered him held on $10,000 cash bail.

In the aftermath of the Nov. 25 robbery of the Members Plus Credit Union on Gallivan Boulevard, a State trooper assigned to the Boston office of the State Police Crime Scene Services Section analyzed a demand note the robber left at the scene. The trooper was able to isolate a latent fingerprint impression that matched prints on file from Learning’s earlier offenses.

At Tuesday’s proceedings, Assistant District Attorney Kevin Santos told the court that Boston Police together with State troopers assigned to the joint FBI and State Police Violent Crimes Task Force responded to the scene at about 2:00 p.m. after the Boston Police Department received a 911 call reporting a robbery.

Upon arrival, Santos said, authorities spoke with a bank teller, who told them that a man entered the bank through a rear door, walked up to her window, and handed her a note. The note read, “You have two minutes – give me all the $20’s, $50’s, $100’s – no dye – no bag – don’t be foolish.”

The bank teller gave the robber all of the paper currency in her drawer. The defendant allegedly took that money and fled out the rear door.

Responding officers immediately began a search of the area but did not locate the assailant. Members of the VCTF transported the note to their Boston headquarters, where latent fingerprint specialists were able to recover fingerprints matching those of Learning, who had previously been convicted of bank robberies in Middlesex, Norfolk, and Suffolk counties.

Armed with his name, description, and photograph, troopers located Learning near the intersection of Columbia Road and Dorchester Avenue on Nov. 30 and took him into custody.

Learning was represented at arraignment by attorney Richard Gedeon. He is expected to return to court on December 23.
