Foreign Students Detain Out-of-Towner After Theft From Brighton School

A Lawrence man was arraigned on burglary charges this week for allegedly breaking into a Brighton school, only to be detained by students while his alleged cohorts bolted from the scene without him, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

JOSEPH BERRIO (D.O.B. 3/12/90) of Lawrence was arrested Saturday and arraigned yesterday in Brighton District Court. Assistant District Attorney Sulynn Walton recommended that he be held on $500 cash bail; Judge David T. Donnelly set bail at $200.

Walton told the court that Berrio was one of four men who broke into EF Boston, which teaches English to foreign students, on Lake Street just after 2:30 Saturday morning. Among the items they allegedly stole were a black Acer laptop computer and a wallet with credit cards and about $200 in cash; other items are also believed to have been taken. The men allegedly placed the items in a black Ford parked on Lake Street before returning to the school’s campus.

Students saw them men and confronted them, prompting three of the suspects to flee the area first on foot and then in their car; the fourth, Berrio, was stopped and held by the students until Boston Police responded to the scene.

Officers searched the area for the at-large suspects to no avail. They broadcast a description of the vehicle and learned of a similar car stopped by Brookline Police a short time later, but the occupants had alibis and were not identified by the students as the suspects.

Officers notified the students of the Trace stolen goods database at www.tracechecker.com and advised them to file reports if and when they learn that other items had been stolen.

Berrio was represented by attorney Paul Mishkin. He will return to court on June 17.
