Former Celtics Star, Musical Acts to Headline at DA’s Annual Basketball Event

Former Boston Celtics guard and Hub native Dana Barros and a live musical act will join Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley next week at the DA’s annual Basketball for Peace event in Dorchester next week, with every young attendee receiving free tickets to the Boston Sports Museum.

Now in their third year, the Feb. 22 games will also feature free food and drink from mainstay supporters at The Olive Garden, which also provides refreshments for Conley’s Soccer for Peace tournaments each summer.

“The success of Soccer for Peace convinced us to launch a winter event with the same goal of peace through teamwork and cooperation,” Conley said. “Basketball for Peace brings the city’s young people together for a day of athletic fun that embraces sportsmanship and fair play. Whether it’s on the court or in a courthouse, those are values that serve everyone well.”

Basketball for Peace was conceived as a way to bring schoolchildren some social and athletic interaction with law enforcement during the winter months. As the summer soccer tournament does, Basketball for Peace offers community residents the chance to meet and play with prosecutors, victim advocates, and law enforcement partners in a safe, fun, healthy environment.

New this year will be a half-time show featuring the musical group Dream BIG and solo artist Expo. Dream BIG – who urge listeners to “Dream Beyond Ignorant Gestures” – are based here in Boston, and Expo is a 20-year-old student at Suffolk University in his offstage hours. Additionally, the Boston Sports Museum, located at the TD Garden, has donated free museum tickets to all young attendees.

Expected to take part in the games this year are youngsters between 11 and 15 from the Bird Street Community Center, the Lilla G. Frederick Middle School, Project RIGHT, the Revere Police Activity League, and Revere Public Schools. The games will begin at 2:00 p.m. and run until 5:00 in the Frederick Middle School gymnasium. Media are invited.
