A North End man’s exuberance over a winning lottery scratch ticket was his undoing when his arrest for jumping on a stranger’s car and denting the hood led police to a sandwich bag full of marijuana in his pocket, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

JOSEPH TAGLIERI (D.O.B. 12/12/79) was released on his own recognizance today following his arraignment in the Boston Municipal Court on charges of destruction of property and possession of more than an ounce of a Class D substance. He will return to court on Sept. 21 with attorney David Fitzgerald.

Boston Police on routine patrol along Prince Street yesterday watched as Taglieri scratched a lottery ticket and screamed “YEEESSSSS!!!!!” into the air. One of the officers called out from their cruiser and asked how much he had won.

Taglieri, rhapsodic over his good fortune, didn’t hear the officers. Instead, he bounded atop the hood and roof of a nearby parked car. That car, a 1994 Toyota Camry registered to a North End woman, sustained a large dent in the roof.

At that point, the officers exited their cruiser to take Taglieri into custody. While being pat frisked, he allegedly stated, “I have weed on me.” The officers did indeed find a sandwich bag about three-quarters full of a green, vegetal substance believed to be more than an ounce of marijuana.

The officers seized the marijuana as evidence. Taglieri was allowed to retain the scratch ticket, which was worth $500.
