GPS Puts Suspect at Homicide Scene, Prosecutor Says

A Dorchester man’s court-ordered GPS monitoring device placed him at the scene of Anthony Depina’s homicide when the 23-year-old victim was shot dead last week, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley’s office said today.

JASON BARBOSA (D.O.B. 1/8/89) was arraigned today in Roxbury District Court on murder charges stemming from Depina’s Feb. 23 homicide. Assistant District Attorney Amy Galatis of Conley’s Homicide Unit recommended that he be held without bail and Judge David Poole granted that request.

Galatis told the court that Depina was out socializing that night. At some point, she said, Barbosa – who knew the victim prior to his death – approached the Depina and chastised him, saying he wasn’t “supposed to be around here.”

Later that night, the prosecutor said, Barbosa approached Depina on Burrell Street and shot him. Depina suffered gunshot wounds to his head and chest, either one of which would have been fatal.

Galatis said that witness accounts assisted in determining Barbosa’s whereabouts before, during, and after Depina’s slaying; that video surveillance captured him in the area around the time of the shooting; and that Barbosa was wearing a GPS monitoring device that put him on Burrell Street when Depina was killed. Boston Police homicide detectives arrested him Saturday.

Barbosa was wearing the device as a condition of his probation on an unrelated assault case. He was represented by attorney John Galvin and will return to court on March 29.
