GRAND JURY INDICTS PAROLEE IN CLERK’S DECEMBER SLAYING

Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley today announced indictments charging a Roslindale man with the murder of 39-year-old Surendra Dangol during a Dec. 26 armed robbery at a Jamaica Plain convenience store.

The indictments charge EDWARD CORLISS (D.O.B. 2/7/46) with first-degree murder, armed robbery while masked, and unlawful possession of a firearm. He is expected to face arraignment in Suffolk Superior Court on March 3.

“The arrest in Surendra’s murder wasn’t the end of the case,” Conley said. “It was the beginning. The investigation continued day after day, week after week, until the evidence had been checked, double-checked, scrutinized, and corroborated.”

Prosecutors allege that Corliss walked into the Tedeschi Food Mart on Centre Street shortly before 3:00 p.m. on the day after Christmas. Surveillance footage shows the assailant – wearing a hat, wig, and scarf – producing a firearm. That footage also shows Dangol, the clerk behind the counter, complying with the man’s demands and placing cash into the man’s backpack.

Nonetheless, prosecutors say, Corliss fired a single shot at Dangol that struck the Nepali immigrant in the chest, mortally wounding him. Dangol died of that injury a short time later. Corliss fled in a white sedan.

In the days following the fatal shooting, Boston Police and Suffolk prosecutors undertook a far-reaching investigation that led first to the identification of the getaway car and later to Corliss’s identity as the alleged shooter.

Corliss was taken into custody on Jan. 7 for violating his parole. He was formally charged with murder on Jan. 14 and has been held without bail since then.

The indictments move Corliss’s case from West Roxbury District Court to Suffolk Superior Court, where it will be adjudicated.

Corliss is represented by attorney John Hayes. Catherine Yuan is the victim-witness advocate assigned by the DA’s office.
