GRAND JURY INDICTS WEYMOUTH MAN FOR NEAR-FATAL COLLISION

A Suffolk County Grand Jury yesterday indicted a Weymouth man whose driver’s license was suspended when he allegedly drove into a 50-year-old pedestrian while high on heroin last fall, District Attorney Daniel F. Conley announced.

The indictments charge COREY LEGERE (D.O.B. 11/6/84) with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs and causing serious bodily injury, leaving the scene of an accident causing personal injury, possession of a Class A substance, and operating with a suspended license.

Boston Police responded to Centre Street on the evening of Oct. 22 for a report of a hit-and-run collision involving a pedestrian. On arrival, they observed the victim, then 50, suffering from severe head injuries after being struck by a green Dodge Caravan that immediately left the scene. Witnesses told the officers that the victim was thrown into the air when struck by the vehicle.

Boston Police then responded to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, where they found Legere, his 23-year-old girlfriend, and the green Dodge Caravan in which they had arrived. The passenger’s side of the front windshield had extensive damage from a collision.

Police recovered a quantity of heroin and a bottle cap with heroin residue from Legere’s clothing. Legere later made voluntary, post-Miranda statements indicating that he had injected heroin prior to the collision – statements that were later corroborated by independent evidence.

The victim, now 51, remains on life support and never regained consciousness.

Legere is held on the $100,000 cash bail set at his arraignment in West Roxbury District Court last year. Yesterday’s indictments move his case to Superior Court, where it will be adjudicated.

A Superior Court arraignment has been tentatively scheduled for March 9. Legere is represented by attorney Peter Muse.
