GRAND JURY RETURNS 14-COUNT INDICTMENT IN QUADRUPLE SHOOTING

The Suffolk County Grand Jury today returned a 14-count indictment charging a 19-year-old Dorchester youth with shooting four people outside a Blue Hill Avenue bar this summer, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley announced.

CHARKEEM HYATT, a.k.a. CHARKEM HYATT, a.k.a. MAURICE MATTOCKS (D.O.B. 12/10/89), now faces four counts of possessing a firearm during the commission of a felony; three counts of aggravated assault and battery with a dangerous weapon; one count of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon; three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon; and single counts of unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, unlawfully carrying a loaded firearm, and unlawful possession of a firearm as a second offense.

Unlawful possession of a firearm as a second offense carries a mandatory five- to seven-year state prison term, Conley said, while possessing a firearm during the commission of a felony carries a minimum of five years in state prison.

“Those enhanced penalties are warranted in a case as egregious as this one,” Conley said. “Every life on that street was put at risk.”

Those charges follow a two-month investigation by Suffolk prosecutors and Boston Police detectives into the July 17 incident outside Packy Connor’s Pub. Evidence developed in the course of that investigation indicates that Hyatt was involved in an early morning altercation in front of the establishment, crossed the street, and recovered a firearm from a parked vehicle. Three women and one man suffered gunshot wounds in the moments that followed, all allegedly from Hyatt’s firearm.

Boston Police officers working a paid detail at the tavern heard the gunshots coming from across the street. They and an off-duty officer allegedly observed Hyatt firing at the victims.

As the officers gave chase, Hyatt allegedly fled down Blue Hill Avenue and onto Ingleside Street in violation of their commands to stop. As he continued to run, Hyatt allegedly raised a firearm and pointed it in the officers’ direction. Officers at this time discharged their duty firearms but did not strike the defendant. Hyatt continued to run and was apprehended a short time later on a Woodcliff Street porch.

The 23-year-old male victim was struck in the right leg. Two female victims, ages 20 and 24, were struck in the leg, and the third female victim, age 25, was struck in the upper back. All four were transported to area hospitals with injuries that were not life-threatening.

The indictments move Hyatt’s case from Roxbury District Court to Suffolk Superior Court, where it will be adjudicated. Hyatt is expected to face arraignment in the Superior Court Magistrate’s Session on Sept. 24. He is represented by attorney Deborah Shopteese.
