Grand Jury Returns Indictment in Woman’s ’04 Murder

The Suffolk County Grand Jury on Friday returned an indictment charging a Dorchester man with murder for the 2004 homicide of Julaine Jules, setting the stage for his arraignment in Superior Court later this month, District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

The indictment charges SHABAZZ AUGUSTINE (D.O.B. 2/19/79) with first-degree murder for the asphyxiation death of the 26-year-old Malden resident, whose body was wrapped in plastic bags when it surfaced in the Charles River on Sept. 19, 2004.

The indictment moves Augustine’s case from Dorchester District Court, where it is currently pending, to Suffolk Superior Court, where it will be adjudicated. His arraignment there is scheduled for Aug. 29.

Jules left her Fort Point workplace at about 7:00 p.m. on Aug. 24, 2004, and never returned. Shortly after midnight, Revere Police and firefighters discovered her burning car in a parking lot off Squire Road. The same day, family members reported her missing to the Malden Police Department. Several weeks later, her body was recovered from the Charles River after a passerby observed it in the water.

Because Jules’ remains were discovered on the Cambridge side of the river, the investigation was first led by the Middlesex District Attorney’s office. It soon widened to include the Suffolk DA’s office, State Police homicide detectives assigned to both district attorneys’ offices, and the police departments of Boston, Cambridge, Malden, and Revere.

Based on evidence developed during that long-term investigation, Suffolk prosecutors approved a warrant for his arrest in late June. The Boston Police Fugitive and Apprehension Team executed that warrant on June 29, taking Shabazz into custody at his Roxbury workplace.

Augustine was arraigned for Jules’ homicide the next day in Dorchester District Court and remains held without bail. Assistant District Attorney Mark Lee, deputy chief of Conley’s Homicide Unit, told the court during those proceedings that the victim and defendant had a relationship that was believed to be romantic in nature, and that Augustine had “a significant romantic interest” in the victim.

On Aug. 24, days after he learned that Jules had spent the weekend with another man, Augustine allegedly developed a ruse to have Jules leave her workplace and go to his Dorchester apartment. It was there that investigators believed Jules was killed.

Fabiola Pierre is the DA’s assigned victim-witness advocate. Augustine is represented by attorney Steve Sack.
