Half-Million Bail in Crash that Killed One, Injured Another

BOSTON, Dec. 17, 2012—A Dorchester woman who was allegedly drunk when she drove her SUV into two pedestrians was held on high bail at her arraignment today just hours before one of them succumbed to his injuries, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

CHAMPREE DINKINS (D.O.B. 4/11/88) was held on $500,000 at her Dorchester District Court arraignment on two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon – a motor vehicle – as well as charges of operating under the influence of alcohol and leaving the scene of an accident causing personal injury.

According to prosecutors, Boston Police responded to 199 Woodrow Ave. just after 4:00 a.m. Saturday for a report a pedestrian struck by a vehicle. Police found an unresponsive 30-year-old Dorchester man lying on his back in the middle of the street and a 35-year-old woman lodged underneath an SUV belonging to Dinkins, prosecutors said.

Making the first responders’ job more difficult was the presence of several individuals behaving aggressively who were involved in a physical altercation at the scene, prosecutors said.

Police located Dinkins at 16 Irma St. According to prosecutors, Dinkin’s eyes were glassy and her breath smelled heavily of alcohol. She was transported to police headquarters for further questioning and then placed under arrest.

The male victim succumbed to his injuries at Brigham and Women’s Hospital late this afternoon, and prosecutors said they would likely upgrade the charges against Dinkins. The female victim suffered non-life threatening injuries and is expected to recover.

Dinkins is represented by Margaret Barusch. She will return to court on Jan. 8.
